'Thundercats - Season Two, Vol. 1'
(6-Disc DVD / NR / (1985) 2006 / Warner Bros.)

Overview: The inhabitants of the planet Thundera evacuate just before it is destroyed. They were pursued by a band of mutants. All but one of their escape ships was destroyed. Only a small group of Thunderans (Thundercats) remained. With only half engine power, the group, which was led by Jaga, had to set a course for the nearest planet. Jaga commanded their ship while the other 7 were in their stasis tubes. Jaga died on their journey to Third Earth and their ship crashed there. Soon they made friends with various groups in the area and they designed a fortress. Mumm-Ra the centuries-old embodiment of evil, along with the mutants that destroyed the rest of the Thunderans are a constant threat. But Lion-O, the new leader of the Thundercats, with his weapon the "Sword of Omens" will help the Thundercats to have a standing chance.

DVD Verdict: With Season 2, several changes take place in the ThunderCats universe, starting with the discovery of three new Thunderians who join the ThunderCats in their battle against evil. And to keep the good/evil balance, we have the introduction of six new evildoers who don't play well with others (or amongst themselves), called the Luna-taks. To complement the new characters we have the addition of new background music (which could take some getting used to for some). However, the opening sequence remained the same throughout the series. With the addition of all the new characters, the original characters seemed to become somewhat overshadowed (especially Tygra towards the end of the series) and their abilities and individual theme music was showcased far less often (with the exception of Snarf). Several new guest characters, vehicles, and other surprises are also introduced. Some changes took place behind-the-scenes as well, where a payment conflict with Rankin/Bass caused head writer and story editor Leonard Starr (writer of such classic episodes as EXODUS, and the LION-O'S ANOINTMENT 5-parter) to leave the show before the end of its run. The MUMM-RA LIVES! 5-parter would be his final five episodes written for the show, a mere ten episodes into Season 2. Imagine what a different outcome the series would have had if Leonard Starr had seen it through to the end. On the DVD side of things, why can't they just put the whole season in one box set?! It can still be 6 disc just put more episodes on each disc. Lion-O is the leader of the group and he can fight by using his sword. The Volume 1 DVDs aren't perfect - the picture quality varies a bit, there are missing commericial bumpers, one of the discs in the original release was defective (missing music track on episode 2), and the bonus material is pretty thin, but this is THUNDERCATS and I'd buy it if it was just the episodes by themselves! This is a Full Screen Presentation (1.33:1) and comes with the Special Features of:

34 episodes on six discs
The Rembrandts music video
The Music of Thundera
Bernie Hoffer: Live!
Subtitles: English, Spanish, French
Audio Tracks: English, French
