'MacGyver - Season Five'
(Richard Dean Anderson, et al / 6-Disc DVD / NR / (1989) 2006 / Paramount)

Overview: One of TVs most enduring and popular heroes, MacGyver returns for a fifth season of action, adventure and ingenious inventions. Travel around the world with MacGyver (Anderson) as he fights for the side of right, escapes at the last second and always saves the day.

DVD Verdict: I'm a longtime Richard Dean Anderson fan, so naturally 'MacGyver' is one of my favorite shows (edged slightly by 'Stargate SG-1'). This season continues the "prime" of MacGyver from season 4. I think 4 is slightly better, but 5 really does maintain that same level pretty much. (My PERSONAL favorite season is the first because of the "Mission Impossible" feel to most of the episodes, but I recognize that these later years are of a higher quality). Seasons 4 and 5 are also the years when the mullet achieved it's greatest heights. This legendary artifact of the past grew year after year, peaking out over these years before RDA finally began trimming it back. After years of seeing him on Stargate with a military cut, it's a bit hard not to laugh at the mullet after all these years! Like every season of 'MacGyver,' season 5 features a good all-ages show that is clean enough for the kids without insulting the intelligence of adults. And of course, there's the MacGyverisms, which became a bit toned down in these latter seasons because they had already taken on a life of their own in pop culture by this time. But they're still present in many episodes. Recommended! This is a Full Screen Presentation (4:3) and comes with the Special Features of all 21 fifth season episodes in this 6 disc box set.
