'Dalziel & Pascoe: Season Five'
(Warren Clarke, Colin Buchanan, David Royle, et al / 2-Disc DVD / NR / (2006) 2012 / BBC Video)

Overview: Detective Andy Dalziel is an idiosyncratic copper with a penetrating wit and questionable personal habits. Inspector Peter Pascoe is his cultured sidekick – a thoughtful man with a degree in Social Sciences, a caring attitude and a sharp brain. But when these two come together these contrasting characters share a commitment.

DVD Verdicts: In the first of the four episodes from the fifth season, 'A Sweeter Lazarus,' Dalziel is back after a few months off due to his shooting in the final episode of the last season. He immediately rubs the new Superintendant up the wrong way and gets involved in his first case back - accidently! A serial killer jumps to his death, but its the discovery that one of the women he was 'halping' might be a kindapped child from back 20 years ago suddenly supercedes it.

In the second episode, 'Cunning Old Fox, you truly have to love fox hunting, or admire the old English style of it to make your way through this very long episode! A prominent lady dies in a fox hunt, but was it a accident or sabotage by the Hunt Sabs? The long-running vein of anger here for the hunt is that Dalziel hates it and doesn't show any love for its members either. An explosive ending with a nice twist.

In the third episode, 'Foreign Bodies,' there's a LOT going on before we get to straight-edged plot line! A coffin washes up on a beach, an art dealer is found dead off a bypass bridge, an Asian tourist on an Emily Brontë tour is found dead at a remote spot, Dalziel takes some time off to have a rendezvous with an old flame, a professor from the old world is writing a tell-all book (entitled 'Secrets of the Wall') and becomes involved in a case of mistaken murder, and a mysterious black dog is found running around everywhere!! Phew! Well, as you would expect, it all comes together, but in a very, very odd Rubik's Cube manner!

In the final episode, Above the Law,' a politician's husband is killed in the woods by a gunman, but the married couple (as it turns out) have major secrets well hidden. A complex tale that seems to take forever to come to fruition, it also involves Ellie giving Peter an ultimatium (her in London or his job). Come the end, a conspiracy theory is unearthed, Peter kills a man in the line of duty and The Fat Controller is as mystified as anyone as to Peter's next move. This is a Full Screen Presentation (1:55.1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
