'This Christmas Live In Chicago' [Blu-ray]
(Michael McDonald / Blu ray / NR / 2010 / Eagle Records)

Overview: One of the music world s most recognizable voices, Michael McDonald performs a special Christmas-themed episode of SoundStage on his new DVD, 'This Christmas - Live In Chicago.'

Blu ray Verdict: Opening the show with the instantly recognizable Doobie Brothers classic, 'It Keeps You Runnin',' Michael McDonald then steps into two other cuts from his solo career, the lovely 'I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near),' and the always-a-fan-fav, 'Sweet Freedom.'

McDonald's husky singing voice has so far earned him 5 Grammys, and here tonight, with his pure, snow white locks of hair bountiful, quaffed and ready for action, he takes us further into his copius musical repertoire.

For this is truly when the title of the Blu ray comes to life, as we get a slew of Holiday songs to witness: 'Every Time Christmas Comes Around,' 'On This Night,' 'This Christmas,' 'Come, O Come Emanuel,' 'Wexford Carol,' 'Christmas On The Bayou,' 'I ll Be Home For Christmas,' 'That's What Christmas Means To Me,' 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,' 'Peace,' and 'White Christmas/ Winter Wonderland.'

Yup, watching this Blu ray in October was a bad mistake as suddenly I wanted egg nog, flashing, colorful lights adorning my windows, cards strung up on string, snow outside, and presents around the tree. Oh, and a frickin' tree would have been nice too!

The set ends with three other Doobie Brothers classics ('Minute By Minute,' 'What A Fool Believes,' and 'Takin' It To The Streets'), before a delicious cover of the Leonard Cohen classic 'Hallelujah' is included (as a bonus) as well. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.77:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
