'Everwood: The Complete Fourth Season'
(Treat Williams, Gregory Smith, Emily VanCamp, Debra Mooney, John Beasley, et al / 5-Disc DVD / NR / 2011 / Warner Bros.)

Overview: In the final season of the series, the unforgettable people of Everwood test the ties that bind them together in joy and tears, friendship and love. Drawn by his feelings for Amy, Ephram returns home and mentors a troubled piano prodigy. When Nina chooses Jake over him, Andy struggles to remain friends with the woman he loves.

DVD Verdict: Let me just say that 'Everwood' was my favorite series and I am so glad to finally have the final DVD set here to review.

Now, as fans of the TV series know, especially those that watched it on TV and then watched these DVD episodes, the music per episode has had to change along the way. Rights and all that jazz, I guess. I really didn't mind the music replacement too much for most of the episodes. I mean, nearly every song was replaced except for all of Blake Neely's beautiful compositions, luckily.

However, I have always said that there is ONE EPISODE that definitely should go uncut and unaltered, and that is the series finale. Although I personally pleaded with Warner Home Video in a chat as well as in numerous forums where it would be read (but obviously wasn't!), they butchered it in the worst way possible!

While many of the songs used in other episodes really were "sound alike" replacements for the originals (they did a good job at choosing replacement songs overall), the songs chosen for the finale were not even close! What's funnier is that one of the key songs (used on the montage of clips from past episodes featuring Amy and Ephram) isn't all that popular, so is presumably not all that expensive!

I also couldn't believe they made another TOTALLY UNNECESSARY change where the original broadcast of the double-length finale was presented as a single two hour program. Not as two separate episodes! Although most won't probably care much about this, it does effect the authenticity, and also ruins some of the early scenes of Part 2, since they didn't have the credits rolling over them originally!

Anyway, enough of that. The box-set also has an alternate ending, never before seen, which is something you usually don't get. I won't give it away whether it is good or bad, but it's definitely worth watching! But, and with that said, this is all coming out some 5 years after the series finale!! And sure Warner Bros. is giving us the DVD set with that cliffhanger that was never aired, but 5 years - come on, guys!

All in all, as you'd expect me to say, this was a great family series. I am in my 60's and enjoyed it so much and now will continue to on DVD. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.77:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs
