'The File Of The Golden Goose: Limited Edition'
(Yul Brynner, Charles Gray, Edward Woodward, John Barrie, et al / DVD / NR / 2011 / MGM)

Overview: A U.S. Treasury agent (Yul Brynner) joins a Scotland Yard detective (Edward Woodward) in going "undercover" to bust a brutal counterfeit gang known as the Golden Goose. But, in a massive double-cross, his British partner defects to the other side.

DVD Verdict: 'The File Of The Golden Goose' is out now as part of MGM's "Limited Edition Collection," which is available from select online retailers and manufactured only when the DVD is ordered. The DVD features a simple menu with no menu for chapters or scenes. Manufacture-On-Demand (Mod) DVDs are made to play in DVD playback units only and may not play in DVD recorders or PC drives.

The basic set-up is that an American Treasury Department agent (Yul Brenner) goes undercover in London's seedy underground to expose a counterfeiting ring that has left a trail of death in its wake. Featuring lots, oh my goodness, SO MANY red London buses and red telephone boxes in this very touristic thriller, it also touches on the remains of the swinging London scene at the time.

Brynner's the American agent who hits England's capital in search of the gang of murderous counterfeiters who killed his girl, while the brilliant, and sadly late Edward Woodward (as Arthur Thompson) is the decent British police officer from Scotland Yard, who insists on being on the case.

Peter Novak runs into all kinds of situations and even a brothel and message parlors. Sure the film runs rather long, some long chunks could have easily hit the cutting room floor, and the ending was very disappointing, but all the actors in this film gave an outstanding performance. A true crime caper classic! This is a Full Screen presentation (1.33:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
