'The Jeff Dunham Show'
(Jeff Dunham / DVD / NR / (2009) 2010 / Comedy Central)

Overview: You've seen Jeff Dunham and his characters on stage at his sold-out concert events. Now see what happens when they perform in front of a live studio audience and go into the real world!

DVD: I'm not sure what Jeff was thinking when Comedy Central gave him this opportunity. It looks like he was trying to give his dummies the same kind of interaction to the real world that Jim Henson did with his Muppets way back in the day. However I think that was catching lightning in a bottle and I don't think Jeff, or anybody for that matter, can catch that same magic again. Dunham's dummies just don't articulate nearly as well on their own. Not even Peanut. This show put them in a scripted situation all on their lonesome. Maybe that sounds good on paper, but the execution lost everything that made Jeff and his cohorts great.

Ventriloquists and their dummies work best when they can feed off of each other. The banter between puppet and puppet master makes the comedy golden. You didn't get any of that in this show. It was the polar opposite of what made his act famous. When they first announced his show I was wondering what the heck was going to be the concept of The Jeff Dunham show because I knew it would be tricky to translate his stand up act to a "show" format.

You know what would have worked? A talk show like Jay Leno or David Letterman. Put Jeff in a desk with Peanut or Walter next to him, get a laundry list of guests and let the improv comedy go wild. Heck even taking his dummies to the streets and doing random interviews with people would have been a lot better.

So this DVD set gives you the complete series. All seven episodes running at around 150 minutes total. You also get some extras like a previously unaired sketch, a behind the scenes featurette, and a blooper reel. I really wished Jeff would have taken the talk show route or something that put Jeff with his crew out there to place his improv talents beyond the stage. Oh well. [SRF] This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:

Entire Unaired Sketch
Behind the Scenes
Bloopers
