'Medium Raw - Night Of The Wolf'
(John Rhys-Davies, William B. Davis, Andrew Cymek, Mercedes McNab, et al / DVD / R / (2010) 2011 / Anchor Bay Entertainment)

Overview: He is called 'The Wolf', a spike-jawed serial killer responsible for the 'Red Riding Hood' murders of 15 young girls. Arrested by Detectives Elliott Carbon (John Rhys-Davies of The Lord of the Rings trilogy) and Johnny Morgan (writer/director Andrew Cymek), he has been declared criminally insane and sentenced to the sanitarium of Dr. Parker (William B. Davis of The X-Files). But now a massive power failure at the maximum-security facility has unlocked the cell doors and trapped Parker, Johnny and the hospital staff inside!

DVD Verdict: With a running theme of Are You The Woodcutter?, 'Medium Raw - Night Of The Wolf' may have a cheesy title, and may have some uber-heavy cheese-soaked lines, but is highly entertaining! Coming across in comic book fashion, complete with evil baddies such as psychopaths, cannibals, anger-ridden steroid users, and The Wolf himself, 'Medium Raw' also features a wonderful, stand alone performance from Brigitte Kingsley ('Dark Rising'). As the wife of the cop Johnny Morgan (writer/director Andrew Cymek), who as a young boy watched his sister get killed by The Wolf, she has grown with him through his nightmares - but tonight, that all comes to an end.

Also starring Mercedes McNab ('Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and 'Hatchet'), John Rhys-Davies ('The Lord of the Rings' trilogy), William B. Davis (The X-Files') and WWE superstars Jason 'Christian' Reso and Andrew 'Test' Martin, 'Medium Raw' is a grisly shock-horror tale that draws blood early on and never lets up!

John Rhys-Davies as the cop partner to hot shot Johnny isn't around for long, but that's a good thing - as he has lost so much weight (soooo much) that his face is haggard, his eyes drooping, his clothes just hang two sizes too big from his thin shoulders, and his overall gauntness is just sorrowful. In truth, our hero, Johnny (writer/director Andrew Cymek) couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag, but at least he gets the job done, I guess!

Anyway, 'Medium Raw' takes place during a blackout at an insane asylum, the loss of power allowing all the criminally insane inmates, like Benny the Bull (who is enraged by the color red), Mabel Hatcher (a 400lb cannibal), Oliver Wilthrop (who is a sexual freak who lives for feet and toes) and worst of all, The Wolf, to escape.

And with a collective cast of characters locked inside ready to be picked off one by one, once the killing starts it never stops! My favorite scene is the kitchen cooking lesson from Mabel to her friend, Dr. Jamie (Kingsley) where she keeps her in close quarters whilst she slices and dices the remains of the cop friend of Johnny she has just killed! Talk about giving Chef Ramsey a run for his money!

As we head to the finale, I won't give anything else away, save for The Wolf's suit, complete with handmade metal claws and hydraulic jaw to attack his victims, is highly imposing, and his real identity only revealed in a twist come the final minutes! There is an alternate ending, which makes more sense given what Johnny goes through, but test audiences didn't like it, so they tell us! This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) and comes with the Special Features of:

•Trailer
•Deleted Scenes
•Extended Scenes
•Alternate Ending
