'Ugly Americans - Season 1, Volume 1'
(Animation / DVD / NR / 2010 / Comedy Central)
Overview: Take the Big Apple, add every horrifying beast, science-fiction freak and fantasy faerie, shake thoroughly and you've got Comedy Central’s new hit animated series, UGLY AMERICANS. This animated horror-comedy series follows one Mark Lilly, social worker at the Department of Integration, as he helps new citizens both human and "other" adapt to hectic life in the Big Apple.
DVD Verdict: This show is the best animated show on TV, HANDS DOWN. I've seen every single episode on TV, now watched every single episode on DVD (twice), and I'm awaiting seson two avidly!
And, don't get me wrong for this show is ONLY occasionally funny ... IF you don't allow yourself to become one with it from the off! And sure it relies heavily on the gross-out factor, and sure it features so soulless characters.
But, and with all that said, I love the "alternate universe" concept of the show. The writing is so sharp and funny - it's the way South Park used to be, but better! Honestly, who came up with the character of the succubus girlfriend? WICKEDLY HILARIOUS!
Also, for those that might be offended, the second episode is VERY anti-religion - as are a couple of others. Oh, and there's a sight-gag featuring what appear to be LDS missionaries, so beware!
Anyhoo, if a demon spawning a pronged, three-foot penis out of his chest isn't your cup 'o tea, and you think any of the above is too weird to sit through an episode of, well, this show is NOT for you, my friend! [MM] This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
