'Wallace & Gromit: The Complete Collection'
(Peter Sallis, et al / 4-Disc DVD / NR / 2009 / LGF)

Overview: Millions of fans agree – no one makes animated mayhem like crackpot inventor Wallace and his faithful dog, Gromit. Join the Oscar®- winning sensations for four madcap adventures in their cheesiest, breeziest and funniest collection yet!

DVD Verdict: This new collection features a space rocket adventure (A GRAND DAY OUT), something fishy afoot (IN THE WRONG TROUSERS), then it's time for a sheep-rustling scheme (CLOSE SHAVE), before finally trouble rises after Wallace & Gromit start a bread- baking business in A MATTER OF LOAF AND DEATH!

"Grand Day Out" explores Wallace's fascination with cheese. It is not the best of the three currently available (the story isn't quite as compelling as "Trousers" and "Shave"), but still very good claymation. Probably more appealing to younger children. Of course, Wallace is the nominal star of the show. Brilliant as an inventor, he's a bit of a twit in all other respects. Gromit, his long-suffering dog, is at least as smart. Gromit is silent, but I keep thinking that he gets all the great lines - that's how good the body language is. The guest star in this program is, well, improbable. You get to find out for yourself, but this additional character is just wonderful.

This has got to be one of my favorites of all time. Not only are the characters well-formed and interesting but in a very short video you get to know their personalities and see them thru trials and tribulations with lots of laughs thrown in, too. The chase scene in "In The Wrong Trousers" should not be missed. It's got to rival the best of Hollywood!

The pace of "A Close Shave" is just right, I love the developing romance between Wallace & Wendolene and the movie is chock full of delightful nonstop family friendly humor. Of all the films I also found this one to have the most in terms of exposing non-Brits to aspects of British culture. The sheep are adorable, and I will never hear "Organize yourselves" again without laughing. Charming clever movie that I show all my friends.

'A Matter of Loaf and Death' starts with the murder of Baker Bob, killed by an unknown assailant with his own rolling pin — the twelfth victim of the killer-at-large. It all goes downhill for Wallace and Gromit after that, literally — the duo save poor Piella Bakewell and her dog Fluffles as gravity and a bike with broken brakes send them hurtling down a hill towards the zoo.

Though Gromit finds clues that make him suspect Miss Bakewell is up to something, he spends most of the rest of the movie trying to convince Wallace. But Wallace and Bakewell start a whirlwind romance that leads to an impressive chase and a couple of broken hearts. [FG] This is a Full Screen Presentation (1.33:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
