'INXS - Mystify'
(INXS / DVD / NR / 2010 / Eagle Records)

Overview: This INXS concert from the Loreley Festival in Germany was filmed for the famous German TV series Rockpalast on June 21st 1997, just five months before the tragic early death of lead singer Michael Hutchence on November 22nd.

DVD Verdict: Let's be honest here, videos of concerts filmed back in the '80s or '90s now showing up years later are often of poor quality. So, even though this Rockpalast series is usually spot on, being that it was filmed in 1997 gave me cause for a massive amount of pre-emptive skepticism!

But, thankfully, this video transfer has turned out very well. The set opens with the late Michael Hutchence going straight into 'Elegantly Wasted,' before always-brilliant 'New Sensation' comes forth. Hutchence controls the set from start to finish, aiming the mic at the very energetic, very in sync German crowd on many occasions.

This show even features some back-up signers - complete with INXS short-short T-shirts - which is nothing that I can recall them ever having on stage with them through the '80s into the early '90s.

Filmed just months before he passed away all too soon, Hutchence is captivating here, but in many moments can kinda be seen 'out of step' re: some erratic stage antics - but not for long, and not too many times. I mean, this guy was most definitely one of the most visually exciting performers to watch live. I saw him twice, ran into backstage once too, and he was always trained on the art of the live performance.

The bonus tracks are from a 1984 concert with the 7 tracks running back to back at some 24 minutes.
