Title - 'Into the Woods' (OST)
Artist - Stephen Sondheim

My goodness! The Into The Woods: 2-Disc Deluxe Edition soundtrack features an incredible 20 songs from the film and the score, which includes songs from the original stage musical, 'Finale/Children Will Listen,' 'Giants in the Sky,' 'On the Steps of the Palace,' 'No One Is Alone' and 'Agony,' among others.

For those not in the know, 'Into The Woods' is a 2014 American musical fantasy film directed by Rob Marshall, and adapted to the screen by James Lapine from his and Stephen Sondheim's Tony Award–winning Broadway musical of the same name.

It features an ensemble cast that includes Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Tracey Ullman, Christine Baranski, Lilla Crawford, Daniel Huttlestone, MacKenzie Mauzy, Billy Magnussen, and Johnny Depp.

Inspired by the Grimm Brothers' fairy tales of "Little Red Riding Hood", "Cinderella", "Jack and the Beanstalk", and "Rapunzel", the film is a fantasy genre crossover centered on a childless couple, who set out to end a curse placed on them by a vengeful witch. Ultimately though, the characters are forced to rectify the consequences of their actions.

Now, as it has to be said, although some of my favorite songs (ie: 'No More') are omitted from this show versus the OBC version (which will always be my favorite as you simply cannot compare with Bernadette Peters!), Sondheim is Sondheim. The actors have surprisingly capable voices, Anna Kendrick in particular shining.

Sure, some of the lyrics have been altered to better suit the upcoming movie - which I don't personally have a problem with. I was skeptical about the movie, but after hearing the soundtrack I am almost looking forward to what this movie will be. If you are expecting the brilliance and timing of the original Broadway cast you aren't going to get it. But I also own the London soundtrack and find this one much more enjoyable than that one!

Sondheim always delivers, and fans of the show will be satisfied and able sing along. Indeed, this double CD also includes a complete libretto! The Soundtrack also includes a wealth of incidental music. Fully half an hour of the ninety-minute soundtrack is instrumental.

All in all, the overall majority of this score is extremely satisfactory. If you are a fan of the show, or even if you are unfamiliar with this work at all, I promise that the Soundtrack to 'Into The Woods' will make you believe in movie musicals again.
