Title - 'Love, Dad'
Artist - The Larry Newcomb Quartet

For those not in the know, veteran jazz guitarist Larry Newcomb and his son, bassist Jake Newcomb team up for a high-quality straight ahead jazz quartet set.

On Love, Dad (out February 5th, 2021 via Essential Messenger), The Newcombs, who are joined by pianist Thomas Royal and drummer Dave Marsh, perform six of the guitarist’s originals plus swinging versions of four standards.

Larry Newcomb, who is considered one of the top all-round guitarists on the scene today, has played in a wide variety of settings during his productive career but his true love is modern straight ahead jazz.

1. 'You Stepped Out of a Dream'
2. 'Essential Messengers'
3. 'Cliffhanger Blues'
4. 'Love, Dad'
5. 'Tricotism'
6. 'Soirée'
7. 'Secret Agent Man'
8. 'Hearts In Suspension'
9. 'Love Intentionally'
10. 'The Song Is You'

Love, Dad (which is dedicated to Larry Newcomb’s three sons, and which is based on the chord changes of Stella By Starlight) is his fifth recording as a leader and opens with the laid back ambiance of Nacio Herb Brown's 'You Stepped Out of a Dream,' and backs that up with the sultry, Benson-esque mood of 'Essential Messengers,' the quirky, and it's been (correctly) said "almost Monkish" 'Cliffhanger Blues,' and then we get both the cultured title track and the upright bass work of Jake Newcomb taking over on their rendition of Oscar Pettiford’s classic 'Tricotism.'

Next up is the original jazz waltz of 'Soirée' which comes complete with more than a few adventurous solos of the program and that's followed by one of my all-time favorites from back in the day, the gently rollicking, albeit here restrained, good time of 'Secret Agent Man' (written by F. Sloan and Steve Barri and made famous by Johnny Rivers).

The beautiful piano-led ballad 'Hearts In Suspension' is then backed by a beautiful modern jazz waltz in the form of 'Love Intentionally,' with this truly divine album coming to a close on the all-out, swing-flounce of Jerome Kern's 'The Song Is You.'
