Title - 'Rendezvous'
Artist - Clint Holmes
For those not in the know, Clint Holmes is a singer-songwriter and Las Vegas entertainer. He was born in Bournemouth, England, the son of an African-American jazz musician and an English opera singer, but was raised in Farnham, New York; a small village southwest of Buffalo, as a child.
Indeed, Holmes has been a Las Vegas show attraction since the early 1970s. In 2006, he closed his headlining show at Harrah's Las Vegas Casino, which renamed its main showroom for him. From 1990 to 1995, he hosted Honda Campus All-Star Challenge on the BET network, and, after the event became non-broadcast, continued to host the final matches through 2008. Most of Holmes' Vegas band members also appear in a locally popular R&B/jazz group, Santa Fe and The Fat City Horns.
Having spent more than 20 years performing, Holmes has also served as Joan Rivers’ sidekick and announcer on “The Late Show”, as the musical feature and event correspondent for “Entertainment Tonight”, and as the host of his own Emmy award-winning talk/variety show.
With jazz timing and phrasing informing his velvety tenor croon on eleven cuts, including three new songs that he co-wrote, Clint Holmes' brand new album Rendezvous is a pure, unadulterated musical delight from start to finish.
1. 'Stop This Train'
2. 'At the Rendezvous' (featuring (Joey DeFrancesco)
3. 'I Loves You Porgy' / 'There's a Boat That's Leavin' Soon for New York' (featuring Dee Dee Bridgewater & the Count Basie Orchestra)
4. 'Every Time We Say Goodbye' (featuring Jane Monheit)
5. 'All of Me'
6. 'Say Something' (featuring Ledisi)
8. 'A Perfect Trance'
10. 'My Way'
11. 'What You Leave Behind' (featuring Dave Koz)
Produced by eight-time Grammy winner Gregg Field, Rendezvous brings together a rather diverse playlist that reinterprets modern day and classic pop hits, soulful R&B, theatrical tunes and numbers culled from the Great American Songbook.
With Holmes’ dulcet vocals front and center amongst the live instrumentation, sweeping strings and orchestra accompaniment, the album comes across as a late night, underground bar session; VIP guests only, of course.
'Stop This Train' is up first and that is backed by both the uptempo gentle scat swing of 'At the Rendezvous' (featuring Joey DeFrancesco), and then comes my own personal favorite - 'I Loves You Porgy' / 'There's a Boat That's Leavin' Soon for New York' (featuring Dee Dee Bridgewater & the Count Basie Orchestra). Wow, what an incredible big band sound, a real flashback to the days of Sinatra and company.
A quietly beautiful cover of Ella Fitzgerald's hit 'Every Time We Say Goodbye' (featuring Jane Monheit) is yet another pure delight here, and that's followed by the ballad 'All of Me.' The mid-tempo, Gospelesque piano work of 'Say Something' (featuring Ledisi) is up next. The first single shipped to radio stations for airplay, this stirring duet between Holmes and multi-time Grammy nominee Ledisi also features Grammy winner Patti Austin. She sang, conducted and arranged the background vocals on the track that will also be remixed for dance floors and serviced to club DJs.
West Side Story's sensual, soul baring tale of 'Maria' is a highlight here also as it showcases Holmes' vocal abilities to perfection, and that's followed by the Latina flow of 'A Perfect Trance' and then comes the flowing 'Marie.' A quietly cultured cover of Frank Sinatra's 'My Way' is next and then this incredible, heartfelt album is brought to a close with a soul yearning 'What You Leave Behind' (featuring Dave Koz).
