Title - 'Repentless' [CD+DVD]
Artist - Slayer
Repentless, the 12th studio album from the iconic thrash/metal band SLAYER, and the first without beloved founding member Jeff Hanneman, makes the highest Billboard debut in the band's 32-year recording career, coming in at #4 on the Top 200 Album Charts and scanning 50,000 units.
The album kicks off with a bout of deep, dark bass, before thundering into the opening instrumental track, 'Delusions of Saviour.' That's backed by the drum fest title track, 'Repentless,' an absolutely incredible ride into the world inhabited by the inimitable US Metal legends. The speed metal vibe of 'Take Control' is next, and is backed by, for my money, at least, the best song on this new album, the quite brilliant 'Vices.' A track that powers along, and for the most part is also the most "tuneful" among the 12 cuts, it carries with it a melodic bass line that you simply cannot avoid, well, nodding to!
Slow to mid-tempo drums eventually lead us into 'Cast the First Stone,' which is backed by the joint longest track on the album, 'When the Stillness Comes.' A song that was also released on vinyl for Record Store Day on April 18th, 2015, as it gently begins, you can just sense the Metallicaesque approach to the drums and the bass - but as Araya's vocals kick in, it's all Slayer that that juncture. The screamfest 'Chasing Death,' a track dealing with alcoholism, is followed by the guitarslinging, 'Implode.' Indeed, this latter song was actually debuted at the 2014 Revolver 's Golden Gods Awards ceremony, and was the first new song in five years from Slayer!
Prior to making this album, Araya had said that after the death of Hanneman and the leaving of Dave Lombardo (drums), that "after 30 years, it would literally be like starting over". Hence, he honestly didn't know whether Slayer would/could continue, but luckily for all Slayer fans, and after it was revealed that the band had actually recorded one song prior to Hanneman's passing, that a new album (Repentless) would be made, after all. 'Piano Wire' is that aforementioned track, and is backed by the quite breathtaking 'Atrocity Vendor' - a cut that thunders along like a bullet train about to derail at any given sharp turn!
And so, as both 'You Against You' and the ultimate headbanger 'Pride in Prejudice' come forth to round out his thunderous new album, it's obvious that Ayara and co. made the right choice in recording a new album - for the fans as much as themselves. This Limited Edition package also includes a bonus DVD, 'Live At Wacken 2014,' plus 'A Making Of' documentary.
